Pierre Chapo came from a Parisian family of craftsmen. While studying architecture, he met his partner, the painter and sculptor Nicole Lormier. After returning from a trip to North America, among other places, the couple opened a gallery in 1958. In addition to Chapo’s first pieces of furniture, they exhibited decorative objects, lighting, tableware, ceramics, and Scandinavian designer furniture.
In 1968, Chapo moved the showroom and the workshop to the village of Gordes in the Vaucluse. Today, their grandson Zoran continues his grandparents’ work there. The furniture is made true to the original design. The finish is also still done as before, using linseed oil, thinned with turpentine.
Over the years, more than 100 designs by Pierre Chapo will have seen the light of day. Among them are the well-known stools with diagonal legs and the ‘Godot’ bed, made at the request of the Irish author Samuel Beckett.
