Knoll

De naam Knoll staat voor modern innovatief design en voor topkwaliteit dankzij degelijke materialen en vakkundige productie.

Hans Knoll richtte zijn meubelbedrijf in 1938 in New York op. In 1941 ontmoette hij architecte en designer Florence Schust, die zijn vrouw zou worden. Florence die wees werd op jonge leeftijd, werd opgevangen door de Saarinen-familie en had een hechte band met zoon Eero. Haar connecties en de vaardigheden die ze ontwikkelde aan de Cranbrook Academy of Art vormden de basis van haar ontwerpcarrière.


Hans en Florence Knoll bouwden een toonaangevende onderneming uit, die een stempel drukte op het Amerikaans modernisme. Florence Knoll richtte ook de Planning Unit op, een team designers voor de inrichting van kantooromgevingen. De eerste catalogus van Knoll bestond uitsluitend uit meubelen van de Deense ontwerper Jens Risom. Mettertijd gingen ook andere ontwerpers voor het bedrijf werken zoals Harry Bertoia, Richard Schultz, Warren Platner, Marcel Breuer en Eero Saarinen.
