The Pedestal Collection
Original Design
Few collaborations in modern design have been as impactful as the partnership between Eero Saarinen and Florence "Shu" Schust. Their shared passion for architecture and furniture design, which began at the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art, led to groundbreaking creations that continue to influence interior design today. From their deep-rooted friendship to their revolutionary work at Knoll, Saarinen and Schust shaped the future of modernist aesthetics. One of their most iconic achievements, the Pedestal Collection, exemplifies their visionary approach—blending sculptural elegance with innovative production techniques. This is the story of how two creative minds transformed the landscape of modern design.

Eero & Shu: A Design Partnership Born in Cranbrook
The friendship between Eero Saarinen and Florence "Shu" Schust, which began at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, laid the foundation for an influential design partnership. Florence, a protégé of Eero’s father, Eliel Saarinen, developed a close bond with Eero, strengthening their later collaboration at Knoll.
The Birth of the Pedestal Collection
“We’re making a chair with one leg,” Eero declared in 1955, initiating the creation of the iconic Pedestal Collection for Knoll. This collection of tables, chairs, and stools, characterized by its sculptural form and high-quality materials, embodies Saarinen’s modernist vision.

Eero Saarinen: A Master of Total Design
Inspired by his architect father and textile designer mother, Eero Saarinen believed in "total design." His unique ability to merge sculpture, design, and architecture—clearly evident in the Pedestal Collection—made him one of the greatest modernists of the 20th century. His architectural background, combined with his love for sculpture, shaped his distinctive vision.
Knoll’s Innovative Production
The Pedestal Collection, a fusion of art and technology, was the result of Saarinen’s artistic vision and Knoll’s innovative production processes. This collaboration enabled the realization of Saarinen’s complex, sculptural designs.

A Timeless Design
Sixty years later, the Pedestal Collection remains an icon of modern design. Saarinen’s visionary creations, defined by visual purity and timelessness, continue to inspire interior designers worldwide.
