Jan des Bouvrie (1942-2020) was a renowned Dutch designer, celebrated for revolutionizing interior design in the Netherlands. Born into a furniture retailing family, he studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Des Bouvrie's iconic Cube Sofa, designed in 1969 for Gelderland, marked the beginning of a prolific career that defined modern Dutch aesthetics, particularly through his advocacy for light and white interiors.
Over his career spanning more than five decades, he expanded his influence to include various design realms, from furniture to architectural projects. In 1993, he established Het Arsenaal with his wife, Monique, blending a design studio, showroom, and restaurant, which became a hub for design innovation. His work earned numerous accolades, including being named a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
