VitraHaus

VitraHaus

The VitraHaus, built by Herzog & de Meuron, is Vitra’s flagship store and home to the Vitra Home Collection. Here, you can view furniture arrangements in different design styles, which include both the great Vitra classics and the latest contemporary designs. This means that you can find inspiration for your home, explore your taste in design and try out, order and purchase furniture and design objects. Enjoy the view from the loft and then set off on a tour of discovery: in addition to the showroom over four floors, a shop, the Lounge Chair Atelier and the Café await you on the ground floor.

The Interior Studio is located on the ground floor opposite the main entrance of the VitraHaus. The studio offers an inspiring working atmosphere where you can view fabrics and material samples or attend a consultation appointment. An experienced team will create a mood board that can assist you in furnishing a living room or even an entire house.

In the Lounge Chair Atelier, you can select the materials for your Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames, receiving personalised advice from the VitraHaus team, and then observe the final steps in the handcrafted production of your new favourite armchair. Located on the ground floor of the VitraHaus, the dedicated workshop has a calm, tranquil interior in natural, earthy tones, and offers a wealth of information about this modern furniture icon, which has been manufactured by Vitra for over 50 years – from the story behind the Eames Lounge Chair’s creation to the sustainability of the product.

Shop & drinks

The shop on the ground floor of the VitraHaus offers a wide selection of design objects, home accessories and publications. These include select furniture designs by major designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Jasper Morrison and Hella Jongerius, miniatures and faithful re-editions from the Vitra Design Museum, as well as offers from other design manufacturers such as Tom Dixon, Alessi, Hay and many more.

At the Café, you can enjoy a regularly changing menu of fresh regional specialties. When the weather is nice, you can relax out on the terrace or in the meadow at the foot of the Tüllinger Hill. There is also a set menu of the day in addition to the regular menu. In addition to the Café, the Airstream Kiosk – an original Airstream trailer, a 1968 20’ Globetrotter – gives Campus visitors an additional dining option during the summer months on the meadow between the VitraHaus and the Vitra Design Museum. The take-away restaurant not only offers small snacks and drinks for those between-meal hunger pangs, but also baskets, blankets and packed lunches for people to take along on their walk along Verner-Panton-Weg to the Vitra picnic area on Tüllinger Hill.

The Depot Deli serves a variety of internationally inspired delicacies as well as take-away options suited for a quick snack on the go. Additionally, the Deli serves brunch with regional specialities every Sunday between 9:30 AM and 2 PM.

Design collection

The Vitra Design Museum is dedicated to the research and presentation of design, past and present, and examines its relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. Every year, the Vitra Design Museum organises up to ten exhibitions on a wide range of topics about design and architecture, which are shown in the main building by Frank Gehry, in the Schaudepot by Herzog & de Meuron and in other locations on the Vitra Campus.

The Schaudepot opened in 2016. It hosts part of the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, which with 7000 pieces of furniture, over 1000 lighting objects, and numerous archives, as well as the estates of several famous designers, ranks among the most important holdings of furniture design in the world. The permanent exhibition presents over 400 key pieces of modern furniture design from 1800 to the present.

Although the main building of the Vitra Design Museum designed by Frank Gehry, which opened in 1989, was originally conceived as a venue for the collection, it is used today for the presentation of major temporary exhibitions. Up until now, the museum collection has never been on permanent display. In this context, a second entry point will be created to the Vitra Campus, enhancing its connections to the cities of Basel and Weil am Rhein.
