Hans Knoll founded his furniture company in 1938 in New York. In 1941, he met architect and designer Florence Schust, who would become his wife. Florence, who was orphaned at a young age, was taken in by the Saarinen family and had a close relationship with the Saarinen’s son, Eero. Her connections and the skills she developed at Cranbrook Academy of Art formed the basis of her design career.
Hans and Florence Knoll built a leading company, which left its mark on American modernism. Florence Knoll also founded the Planning Unit, a team of office environment designers. Knoll’s first catalogue exclusively featured furniture by Danish designer Jens Risom. In time, other designers also started working for the company, such as Harry Bertoia, Richard Schultz, Warren Platner, Marcel Breuer, and Eero Saarinen.
Designcollectors has a lot of Knoll classics in stock, such as the Bertoia Diamond Armchair, Diamond Highback and Bench, and Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe, the Breuer Wassily Lounge Chair and Cesca Chair, Schultz 1966 Outdoor Collection, Florence Knoll Bench and Relax Sofa, the Saarinen Round Table, Womb Chair and Tulip Chairs, and the Platner Side Chair and Coffee Table.
