Le nom de Thonet sonne comme la promesse d’un mobilier haut de gamme, innovant et très élégant.

En 1819, Michael Thonet monte un atelier d’ébénisterie à Boppard am Rhein.  Créée en 1859, l’iconique chaise de bistrot n° 14 (devenue depuis n° 214) signe le départ d’une véritable success story. Michael Thonet est l’inventeur d’un procédé consistant à rendre élastiques de longues barres de bois sous l’effet de la vapeur, pour ensuite leur donner la forme souhaitée.  Cette technique de cintrage du bois marque l’avènement de la production industrielle.  En 1930, l’emblématique chaise n° 14 s’était déjà écoulée à plus de 50 millions d’exemplaires.


Après 1930, Thonet se consacra à la fabrication de meubles en acier tubulaire, conçus par trois célèbres architectes appartenant au mouvement Bauhaus, en l’occurrence Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe et Marcel Breuer.  Depuis lors, l’entreprise occupe la position de leader mondial.  Outre les créations d’architectes, la maison Thonet a développé une importante production personnelle. Thonet est une entreprise familiale gérée aujourd’hui par la cinquième génération.
