Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955
In 1955, Ilmari Tapiovaara, a designer of chairs and furniture, undertook a project to create a lamp. His inspiration came from Maya the Bee, a charming character from a 1912 children's book. Tapiovaara designed a cylinder made of small metal discs, which diffuse the light like a shimmering honeycomb, enveloped in a warm atmosphere. At Designcollectors, you can find 3 different versions of the Maija lamp: a table lamp, floor lamp, and pendant lamp.
The Tapiovaara Maija 30 Floor Lamp features discs with a diameter of 30 centimeters. The metal lampshade is matte white, with brass legs, finished in a matte texture. The diffuser is made of white translucent technical plastic and comes with a dimmer.
