The base consists of a single, fluidly shaped pedestal that supports the table's oval-shaped top. Saarinen wanted to create a table that eliminated the clutter and visual noise caused by traditional four-legged tables, allowing for a more streamlined and harmonious aesthetic. The oval shape of the tabletop allows for easy conversation and accommodates more people than a traditional rectangular table of the same length. It also provides a visually pleasing contrast to the curvilinear base.
The table's top is available in a variety of materials. This version has a white laminate top.
