Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf

William Stump ( William Eugene “Bill” Stumpf, 1936-2006). and Donald Chadwick (a.k.a Don Chadwick, born 1936) joined together to create one of Herman Miller's most well-known designs. In designing the Aeron Chair, Chadwick and Stumpf took on a huge challenge, making an office chair that truly supports the human form, and resulted in a chair without one single straight line. Over the last several decades, Don Chadwick has pioneered the use of modern materials, molding processes, and mechanisms to revolutionize the field of ergonomic chair design. Stumpf was a skillful innovator and something of a philosopher who envisioned a world where design serves civility. And yet, when he looked around, he saw design that too often “denies the human spirit” and “architecture that acknowledges money and not people.”
