S 179 Bar Trolley

Thonet reintroduces the iconic S 179 bar trolley by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe — now available in two distinct versions.

The classic edition stays true to the 1930s design: a sculptural frame in chrome-plated tubular steel with two removable grey-tinted glass shelves, offering elegant mobility for homes, dining areas or refined hospitality settings.

Alongside it, the Thonet x Tanqueray edition, reinterpreted by Sebastian Herkner, brings a bold contemporary twist. This version pairs the timeless chrome frame with London-green fluted glass, mirrored accents, and a high-quality leather handle embossed with the iconic Tanqueray seal.

Two expressions of a design classic — one timeless, one refreshingly modern.

The classic S 179 adheres to the original 1930s construction principles: a continuous bent frame of chrome-plated steel tubing, with precisely calculated radius and wall thickness to ensure both torsional rigidity and lightness. The two removable shelves are made of grey-tinted, tempered glass, seated in rubber or polymer holders for vibration damping and safe load-bearing. All connections are mechanically fixed without visible welds, preserving the signature flowing lines of Mies’ design.

The Thonet x Tanqueray edition retains the same structural steel base but differs technically in material selection and surface treatment. The shelves are made of vertically fluted, custom-cut glass, which requires additional reinforcement through precise clamping profiles and tight tolerances to prevent stress on the fluted pattern. Mirror accents are mounted on corrosion-resistant backings to prevent oxidation. The handle is crafted from high-quality vegetable-tanned leather, reinforced internally and stitched with precision to withstand long-term tension and functional use. This results in a technically sophisticated variant that expands the original design with premium materials and higher finishing complexity.

Mies Magic: The Rock Star of Minimalism

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was the cool, calm mastermind of modern architecture—the guy who proved that a few perfect lines can outshine a whole mess of decoration. Famous for the motto “less is more,” he crafted buildings and furniture with razor-sharp elegance and absolute confidence.

Mies didn’t just shape skylines—he designed legends. The Barcelona Chair, Brno Chair, and MR Chaise are basically the rock stars of modern furniture: all curves, chrome, and effortless style. From the Barcelona Pavilion to the Seagram Building, his work still feels fresh, fearless, and impossibly sleek.

Minimalism never looked so glamorous, thanks to Mies.
